De Weg Naar Wenen De Weg naar Wenen:
How Ajax reached the 1994-1995 UEFA Champions League final.

Champions League group D
Amsterdam, September 14 1994
Ajax 2
AC Milan 0

A great start for Ajax in the UEFA Champions league. AC Milan never got into the match, as they were overrun by a concentrated and agressive Ajax. During the whole match every Ruud Gullit action was accompanied by massive whistles of the Amsterdam crowd. This had something to do with Gullit's desertion of the Dutch national team earlier that summer. Despite the presence of the likes of Savicevic, Gullit, Baresi, Boban and Donadoni, Milan never looked like the defending Champion.

Athens, september 28 1994
AEK Athens 1
Ajax 2
Beforehand there was some anxiety on how this match would turn out, since AEK was a relatively unknown opponent. After AEK took a 1-0 lead, Ajax decided to take control of the game. More pressing was applied and after the equalizer from Litmanen Ajax never looked in trouble again. The winner was scored by 18-year old Patrick Kluivert. Because of the absence of Frank Rijkaard, the average age of the team was brought down to 22,4 years.

Vienna, October 19 1994
Casino Salzburg 0
Ajax 0
This match was held in the Ernst Happel stadium in Vienna. Salzburg's intention was to draw 0-0 and they succeeded. Although Ajax created 2,5 chances, there was never a real threat on the goal of Salzburg. Still, Ajax had to be on the look out for dangerous counterattacks by Casino.

Amsterdam, november 2 1994
Ajax 1
Casino Salzburg 1

Again this match was one with the "concrete" football of Casino vs. the powerless attacks of Ajax. Despite some chances, Ajax never took complete control and even had to concede a goal due to a mistake by 'keeper Van der Sar. Although the very negative style of play by Casino isn't very nice to see, it deserves some respect, since they made football by Ajax impossible. A late equalizer was made by again Jari Litmanen, who turns out to be a real goalgetter in Euro matches.

Triest, november 23 1994
AC Milan 0
Ajax 2
Because of a crowd incident during the AC Milan - Salzburg game, AC Milan was sentenced to play two games outside their own Guiseppe Meazza stadium. Within two minutes Ajax took the lead after a splendid goal by who else than Jari Litmanen. After this goal there were some great chances by Overmars and Ronald de Boer among others, but they were all spoiled. AC Milan made great pressure which resulted in some chances and a goal, that was disallowed because Van der Sar was attacked whilst being in control of the ball. A header into his own goal by Franco Baresi decided the game. Immediately after the last whistle the Milan fans payed tribute to Frank Rijkaard, the Ajacoid that was for so long a Milanista. A tremendous gesture that gave all that were present the goosebums. The 2-0 victory meant qualfication for the quarterfinals.

Amsterdam, december 7 1994
Ajax 2
AEK Athens 0
Although there was nothing at stake at this match other than 1,2 million dutch guilders, some 40,000 fans showed up to celebrate the qualfication for the quarterfinals. AEK never looked like they could disturb Ajax in this game. The goals were scored by Tarik Oulida, a 20 year old reserve player.

Quarter final
Hajduk, march 1 1995
Hajduk Split 0
Ajax 0
Again a scoreless draw. Hajduk never meant to win apart from the first 10 minutes. Ajax never could express it's dominance in goals, so the result was fair. Jari Litmanen should've scored but didn't. The most remakrable man on the pitch was polish referee Ryszard Wojcik. It was clear to everybody that this game was way out of his league.

Amsterdam, march 15 1995
Ajax 3
Hajduk Split 0
Despite a slight case of form-crisis by Ajax, this match was brought succesfully to an end. No one looked in real good shape except for 18 year old Nigerian Nwanko Kanu, who scored the first goal. Hajduk were not once dangerous in front of Ajax' goal. Two goals were made by left back Frank de Boer, one of them a free kick from over 25 meters. For the first time in 15 years Ajax qualified for the Champions cup semi-final.

Semi final
Munich, april 5 1995
Bayern Munich 0
Ajax 0
Ajax never lived up to it's status of clear favourite, Bayern very cleverly manoeuvered itself in the position of the underdog. The first half was clearly for Ajax but again no goals were scored. In the second half Bayern decided to seek the attack more and was almost succesfull on 2 occasions. Frank de Boer was booked after a schwalbe from a Bayern player, and had to miss the return match. Since apparantly it was not given for Ajax to score goals this evening, our defense put a lock on it and the match was led to another 0-0.

Amsterdam, april 19 1995
Ajax 5
Bayern Munich 2
One of the best games of Ajax this season, and making the final for the first time in 22 years! This victory also meant the 100th victory in a European venue.
After 10 minutes Ajax took the lead from a goal by... Jari Litmanen. After a very good counter by Bayern the score was level, but before half-time Ajax was safe. A world class goal by Finidi from about 30 metres, after a nifty move by Jari and a header from Ronald de Boer from a corner put Ajax in the final. Immediately in the second half Litmanen made it 4-1. This not only made the spectators more relaxed, but also the Ajax players. This attitude provoked Bayern to seek for goals. Eventually they scored from the penalty spot, after a handball by captain Danny Blind. Luckily he was not given the red card, because this would've meant he'd miss his third european cup final: In 1987's cupwinnerscup final he was out with an injury, a year later he was sent off after 20 minutes.
Two minutes from the end Marc Overmars made it 5-2 and a long night in Amsterdam began....:-)
